Mr. Md. Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, Chairman


Mr. Choudhury is one of the prominent microfinance leaders in the world having founded one of the largest MFI, ASA which serves 4.5 million poor households, 5.5 million members in Bangladesh through a sustainable program of providing cost-effective financial services. He also co-founded, Catalyst Microfinance Investors (CMI) and ASA International Holding, both registered in Mauritius as an equity investment company and holding company to accelerating the development of microfinance in Asia and Africa. He is also serving as he Chairman in all these three organizations. Besides this, he served as faculty member of Microfinance training in Boulder, USA and also a visiting fellow in Coady Institute at the Saint Xavier University. He also served as Former Advisor in the cabinet of Caretaker Government of Bangladesh (2006-2007) equivalent to ministerial position in-charge of Agriculture, Youth & Sports and Cultural affairs.

Mr. Dirk Brouwer - Board Member


Mr. Brouwer has had a distinguished career in investment banking spanning over 20 years. He worked as First Vice President at PaineWebber Inc. in New York and London for 8 years, he was a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch in London from 1995-2002 and he is the Founder and Managing Director of Sequoia, a leading European, pre-eminent independent corporate finance advisory and private equity firm. Mr. Brouwer also is the Co-Founder of Catalyst Micro finance Investors, Executive Director of Catalyst Microfinance Investment Company and Executive Director- Investment and finance of ASA International. In addition, Mr. Brouwer serves on the board of many of ASA International’s partner organizations.

Mr. Md. Enamul Haque - Board Member


Mr. Haque is currently serving as COO of ASA International and working since 2008 till date. Mr. Haque joined ASA, Bangladesh in 1987 as an Associate Coordinator, he served as a Field Coordinator for nine years at Proshika, Bangladesh.

In the midst of his 35 years of service, Mr. Haque served as a Consultant for Save the Children (USA)-Jordan, UNDP-Bangladesh, CARITAS-Bangladesh, Plan International-Bangladesh, UNDP MicroStart Program-Philippines, Bank of Khyber-Pakistan, Facet BV-Netherlands, CORDAID-Bangladesh, SFD-Yemen, Kashf Foundation-Pakistan, UNDP-Nigeria, Bandhan-India, MISFA-Afghanistan, MBK-Indonesia, World Bank-Eritrea and many other local NGOs. He authored of excellence writing five books on NGO management and poverty alleviation strategies by microfinance. He is one of the founder and ex-chairman of Credit and Development Forum (CDF) and an ex-member of the technical committee for NGO, MFI, Microfinance Regulatory Body created by the Government of Bangladesh.

Mr. Md Belal Hussain - Board Member


Md. Belal Hussain is a Chartered Accountant and a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB). He joined ASA International Holdings on October 2010 and serving as the Head of Accounts & Tax. He was the General Manager (Accounts and Finance) of Janata Bank the state owned largest commercial bank of Bangladesh. He was also a Consultant for the same bank where he actively participated in modernizing the accounting system according to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), risk management, financial planning, shares floating and initial public offering in the capital market. He served five years as the Senior Vice President of Treasury at United Commercial Bank. Beyond serving in the banking arena, Mr. Bilal Hussain also contributed his expertise in the industrial sector working as an Additional/Deputy Chief Accountant/Financial Controller in large manufacturing concerns (Fertilizer & Composite Textile) for about 10 years.

He also served in Kuwait for five years as Chief Accountant of Al Wazzan Holding Group having entities in the business of construction, real estate, hospital and electronics.

Mr. Md. Taufiqul Islam Chowdhury - Board Member


Md. Taufiqul Islam Chowdhury joined ASA International as the Director-Accounts in May 2008. He is also the Director-Accounts of ASA Bangladesh. He started his carrier in 1980 with ASA Bangladesh, a local NGO in Bangladesh. During his 32 years service career, he served in different position of the organization like, DGM-Accounts, Head of Accounts & Admin, Directors-Accounts, Director-HR of ASA, Head of ASA Tower Construction Project, Project Director of ASA Narapati Health Complex and the founder “Registrar” of ASA University Bangladesh after that he served as a Director-Accounts & Finance of ASA University Bangladesh.

Since 1995, Mr. Chowdhury worked as a Consultant, to assist in designing accounts & financial systems for more than 30 partner NGOs of ASA in Bangladesh. Mr. Chowdhury also worked as consultant in various MFIs abroad like UNDP Micro Start Program in Nigeria (2002), Life Bank in Philippines (2004), Lakjaya in Srilanka (2007). He also provided consultancy on preparing program design, accounts and financial systems for 4 local NGOs. Apart from Consultancy Mr. Chowdhury visited several countries like; Japan, Germany, UK, Singapore, China, India, etc for different purposes (supervising, purchasing, exposure visit, following up projects, etc.) on behalf of ASA. Mr. Chowdhury has a Masters Degree in Accounting from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and Master of Business Administration (MBA) major in Human Resource Management from ASA University Bangladesh. He also obtained training on “Overseas General Management Course (OGMC)” from Denmark in 1997.

Mr. A.K.M Aminur Rashid - Board Member


Mr. Aminur Rashid achieved his Masters of Science from Dhaka University. He has been awarded with a certificate in training and development from the Institute of Personnel and Development, United Kingdom by completing “Training of Trainers” course under DANIDA Fellowship Program in Denmark. He also attended a Participatory Planning and Institution Formation workshop organized by COADY Graduates association of Bangladesh and COADY International Institute, Canada in Bangladesh.

Mr. Rashid had been deputed to ASA International in 2011 and serving as Executive Director (Operation and Management). He joined ASA Bangladesh in 1992 and had been closely associated with micro-finance program of ASA since 1992. He started his career in Grameen Bank and worked there for 03 years before joining ASA Bangladesh.

Mr. Rashid is well experienced in microfinance training and TA activities and had successfully implemented microfinance in various countries including Cambodia, Tajikistan, Laos, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Mexico and the Philippines. He carried out a number of assessments, projects review,, etc. in different countries like China, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Tanzania, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Myanmar.

Mr. Rashid has a publication titled “How ASA Operates Profitably Serving the Poor” and co-authored a book titled “Introduction to ASA Innovative and Sustainable Microfinance Model”.
